PAST

Bridging the Gap
Gestural Clay Sculpture Workshop
Led by artist Helaine Schneider
A great sculpture speaks without using words. Well executed sculptures that look like they have come alive, showcases the ability of the artist to express a narrative in a subtle but poignant matter throughout their work. The class I propose is called “Bridging the Gap” referring to the gap between what an artist thinks about and feels and what is effectively expressed through their work. Using the figure as a starting point I will combine basics in anatomy proportions and structure with writing processes to assist each student in developing a unique set of symbols. We will then incorporate these symbols into the student’s narratives. There will be a strong emphasis on storytelling.

2- Day Collage Workshop
Two-day workshop with Derek Gores
Learn to loosen up and create artwork with recycled magazines and more. Using found materials and surprises in the scraps at hand, you will learn to get beyond pre-determining every mark you make. Derek is known for work that is sensual and organic, yet built with dynamic graphic shapes. The viewer is enchanted by one image from afar and then is teased with surprising shifts as you get closer.  Derek will assist you in opening up to the possibilities of new textures, new meaning, and new spatial depth in your work. The collage subject matter is open and can be decided at the beginning of class. Still life, portrait, landscape, and more. Less experienced artists should consider a still life object. Derek will demo and lead a discussion. A touch of art history too. No experience necessary.

Embroidering a Flattering Selfie with Aurora Molina
Participants will create a Selfie using thread and stitches. With the notion of representing oneself through a digital portrait, participants incorporating thread as an element of historical value, looking closely at different textile traditions, like embroidery techniques. Embroidering the selfie versus the instant gratification of the one click away will give the participants the benefit of constructing an image of themselves rather than the ethereal digital rendering of their selfie.

Alla Prima Painting Party (featuring Sunday Brunch)
Oil Painting Workshop
Join us for a very “brunchy” Sunday of Mimosas and Alla Prima oil painting. Alla prima is a wet on wet style of painting and in Italian translates to, “first attempt”. We will begin with a potluck style brunch (mimosas provided) and continue into the afternoon with alla prima painting in the studio.

Beginner students will dip a toe into oil painting and leave with resources for continuing this practice at home. Intermediate to advanced students can use this time to refine their skills and experiment in a relaxing environment. Everyone will have a finished piece at the end of the workshop, painted in alla prima style. Students are encouraged to bring “brunch” themed source imagery.

Various approaches to painting will be encouraged: experimentation of techniques and ideas, trial and error. Students will be challenged to see and interpret in new ways. Personal consultations in each class will cultivate students’ vision. Students will gain the confidence to explore the use of color, mark making, surface quality and composition, emphasizing their own pictorial language. They will explore where they are and where they wish to go.
